The Raw is War Workrate Report

A weekly look at what did and didn't work on Raw is War by Oliver Postlethwaite

Hey! I liked Raw this week!

What Worked
D-Lo Brown and Mark Henry were the glue that held Raw together this week and made for something watchable in every segment. Chyna did ok with a couple of lines but her acting for the most part was pretty terrible. The dance floor brawl kicked ass but it was scary seeing Mr. Indy Worker almost break his neck against the bar. Mark and D-Lo are cultivating some serious personality.

There were parts of the show spanning angle with Kane et al that worked, like the shovel to the head, Paul Bearer giving a shout out to Jesus, and the manhole thing.

I'm still not buying Shawn Michaels as a relevant wrestling personality anymore. His showdown with X-Pac was a blip on the interes meter. X-Pac vs. Shamrock was a lot better as X-Pac kicked Shamrock right in the head and these two are good enough to make an essentially nothing match to set up HHH's return work.

Goldust vs. Jeff Jarrett was an actual wrestling match and it was ok but it wouldn't have worked without Owen Hart's Stampede-laced everyman commentary behind the stick. This was awesome, I laughed out loud. The Blue Blazer angle is old school as hell but it's working for what it's worth. Steve Blackman cracked an actual smile so his jaw's gotta be hurting.

Bossan and Mick Foley had a hell damn good ladder match considering it was on free TV and all. Bossman kept me from writing him off all together by taking ladder shots right in the face. The storyline was screwy but it was there and they built some honest heat to the finish. I still think it's suspect to job out the number one contender so close to the PPV but once again, what, the fuck, do I know?

Dwuayne Gill vs. Marc Mero makes me a fool of me again this week as I sneak it into the worked column. It played to my underdog sensibilities and the kids running around the ring touched my heart in a very profound way. No it didn't. The Blue Meanie showed up and this is good because I can get into goofy WWF comedy when the right guys are in front of the camera. Mankind and Meanie could do some great work together.

Al Snow and the Rock was pretty ok with the crowd getting into it and everything. Snow's moonsault off the barrier looked dangerous but there was no way he would have hit Rock anyway so it also looked stupid. Why not go the extra step and make the spot look good? Why kill yourself for a something so shakey. Ehh. The elbow drop on the Head ruled it every way possible and was the best assault on an inanimate object since Terry Funk elbow dropped Hawaiian Boy's hat at Slamboree. Dwayne Gill doing a main event run-in? This rules@!

What Didn't Work
The Headbangers didn't have a match which works but the alterative of yet another Steve Austin interview wasn't much better and his never ending feud with Undertaker is, *gasp*, boring!

The Outlaws fought the Brood which was good enough but the screw job finish wasn't so I say, eh-ehh.

Tiger Ali Singh had his best match yet, with Val Venis, and it still gets buried way down here at the bottom. It looks like they nixed his push so I won't complain too much when he shows up from now on. Hos.
