The Raw is War Workrate Report

A weekly look at what did and didn't work on Raw is War by Oliver Postlethwaite

Monday, September 7th, 1998

Ok, this aired Monday on TSN. Ok, Tuesday morning. Anyway, Vince really booked the hell out of this one.

What Worked
For the few glorious minutes that it lasted, Val Venis vs. Vader (alliteration!) restored my faith in the baby bull and made me think that Venis deserves the push he's getting. These guys were on, and Venis is already a pretty accomplished salesman. Then the show's booking took over and the two stiffs killed their heat.

New Age Outlaws vs. Mark Henry and Rocky Maivia was pretty good considering this is the WWF, it was on TV, this was a taped show, it was a Saturday not a Monday, and Chyna had the best run-in of the night (and, hey, as much as you may hate Goldberg, he has gotten the spear over as one of the hottest moves in North America this year). Chyna should refrain from making sexy kissy faces though. It's just not in her to pull it off and so it ends up looking bad.

Is kissing Pablo Marquez really such a bad thing? I mean, compared to eating dog food or licking a strange man's toes? Maybe it's just because I've never had sardines in my life that I'm not getting it. I don't know if this segment worked: there was no wrestling and Tiger Ali Singh is passable at best on the microphone. But I can't say I didn't enjoy watching it. I didn't think it was funny but it was...something. In the context of the show, I'll put it up here. Interestingly (or not), TSN edited out a good deal of the kiss the second time they aired Raw (and at 4am too!). Huh?

Vince said pussy.

What Didn't Work
The DOA vs. Ken Shamrock and Steve Blackman. Well, I like Ken's new tights. MrDot.com is registered but there's no page. C'mon Precious Paul! Get off your dog sled and work on your web site.

The Headbangers fought the Southern Justice and I had to watch. Sometimes I just don't think they're paying me enough. I did appreciate the clean finish.

Hey, I like Al Snow as much as the next guy who's been watching grainy handheld footage of him wrestling in high school gyms across your great land but his sit-down interview with Jim Ross was really no good. Look, the head gimmick works when it's over-the-top and full of ironic inside references NOT when ya try and rationalize and legitimize the schtick. This was not funny, this was not Al Snow at his best, this was bad.

Gangrel was the best thing about that match between Edge and Marc Mero. I've seen David Heath on and off for years but never took to him until now. Edge wasn't given enough time to impress me and poor Marc Mero...poor Marc Mero. Undertaker, Kane: blow me.

The Oddities schtick was better this week than the last few times, and drunk Hawk was out of control, but there's only room enough for one mercy pick in the What Worked category, and Tiger Ali already took it.

Too Much deserve some kind of push on Raw, a feud with a couple of Kaentai would be cool if they could keep the comedy to a minimal level. But no, their match agains't Los Boriquas wasn't very good. Everything was a blur at this point (more so than usual), there was probably a run-in, and I spit in your face for that, Vince McMahon.

X-Pac and D-Lo had a decent match with what they were given but at this point in the show all the run-ins were getting way more than ridiculous, and it's Jeff freaking Jarrett with another lame gimmick. D-Lo's still the best member of the Nation, which isn't a compliment so much as a knock against the way overrated Maivia. Undertaker, Kane: I hate you two forever.

Scorpio hasn't had a good match in years, and for all the blown spots in this match, I call out anyone who wants to defend him as a good worker anymore. Oh sure, it's not his fault, Vince won't push him. Ya know, for all we whine about our faves not getting into the spotlight, sometimes there's a reason for it. Hey, look, it's Jeff Jarrett again! Undertaker, Kane: get the fuck off my TV set!
