The Raw is War Workrate Report

A weekly look at what worked and didn't work on Raw is War by Oliver Postlethwaite

It's Canada Day and I *might* be drunk if that helps explains the top heaviness of this report.

What Worked
The Corporate Ministry movement of the show openin' promo left me flat but Steve Austin chimed in with an above average interview, saved it, etc.

Steve Hakman, hired gun, works. Beating Ken Shamrock within an inch of his life and then packing up and leaving was the coolest thing on Raw ever.

How did I let down my guard enough to have the theme from Big Show enter the consciousness of my everyday life? Everytime I type the word "well" it pops into my head. It IS so bad that it's good.

Triple H and the Rock were scintillating enough with the time they were given so, hey!, it worked. 3H looked like he was trying to earn the push they're going to give him. And the Rock, given only a couple of minutes, didn't expose the business like he does on an otherwise weekly basis.

Bradshaw takes a lot of shit from online, ahem, journalists, but I think he's ok and, sloppy though his offensive may be, it looks like it hurts. So, yeah, Ass vs. Acolyte #2 worked. This was also some of my favourite kind of booking, having the king of the ring job to midcard talent.

One time and one time only I'm going to praise effort over actual results as Ivory looked like she really wants to legitamize her division somewhat. Of course, this would have been 20 times better if they'd had Mayumi Ozaki come out of the crowd and make Ivory bleed like a stuck pig.

Jarret and X-Pac was nice and long (for Raw) and mostly wrestling with a swervy run-in so for that it's up here despite the fact that the match was pretty dry.

Steve Austin and the Undertaker had a pretty good brawl that was a marathon in length given what wrestling on the USA network has become. The Undertaker's offense is weak for a guy so big so it's always easy to zone out and lose the flow of the match when he's laying the smack down. Austin isn't much better when it comes to flash but his gimmick makes it work. Decent finish despite the nanosecond of hesitation on Undertaker's part. The post-match beating of the champ was a nice touch too.

What Didn't Work
Bob Holly still shows me enough on the mic that I'm glad McMahon is sticking with this guy's push. But the non-match with Kane that followed isn't the kind of thing that's going to have him seeing the upside of the column.

Chaz "Give 'im a pair of tits and he'll get over" Warrington vs. Meat wasn't long enough to act as a diversion to the women at ringside, although the reverse inverted DVD was cool.

Aren't pimps supposed to be good at selling?
