The Raw is War Workrate Report

A weekly look at what did and didn't work on Raw is War by Oliver Postlethwaite

This report is late. There, I said it.

What Worked
The opening segment of RAW kicked my ass JUST because of Mankind dressed as Leatherface. Man alive, did he ever look cool! Steve Austin was good the mic and it was a well executed, if uninspiring, angle. I got the impression that Sable was coming back as an indentured servant but they didn't sell that part of the angle strong enough at all. Vince is still good in his role but he's gotten too comfortable and it's showing. The Undertaker, Kane and Paul Bearer I can do without.

DX dropping science was a pretty funny series of vignettes. Boy, do I ever miss Brian Pillman. He would be SO good as a member of DX and with less of an emphasize on actual ring work he'd have a much easier time of it as well.

Al Snow and the head as Avatar was pretty good even if only a small fraction of the audience actually got it. I liked Lawler bumping around all old school for Snow. I want them to get this guy in the ring and into a real angle NOW.

Dan Severn and Ken Shamrock vs. Owen Hart and Mark Henry was not bad at all since Shammy was all fired up and the crowd really popped for Severn's manhandling of Henry. Owen was competent, if unspectacular, and god damn me if Henry isn't at the very least improving. The finish was just terrible though and it's sad to see the WWF relying so heavily on run-ins and screwjobs.

Call me a sick fuck but I dug the goofy little tag team Royal Rumble if only because it let us know who was still on the payroll. I want to see more of Golga, as bad as he is. Too Much should get some sort of a push on Raw. The final pairing of Funk & Scorpio vs. Kane & Mankind was real nice in that they gave the losing team a bit of offence before the elimination.

I wasn't pissed off that the actual match didn't take place at the end of the show because it was a cool as hell angle and it may as well have been a match and the crowd was super hot and even if TSN did censor most of the Paul Bearer blade job they at least showed us a coupla decent shots of the blood. So I'm a bit of a ghoul, sue me.

What Didn't Work
I dunno, 3H and X-Pac had a cool ennough series of moves to work but it also had an absolutely horrible cop-out, poorly done, finish. And not only that BUT the two biggest members of the theoretically top heel group in the company wrestling each other could barely get any crowd heat. The whole booking of this match from the ring entrances to the final bell was wrong. The actualy in-ring work was good but this is an example of everything else going wrong

Hey Vader, lose some weight so ya can take the role someone of your size and ability deserves, the top monster heel, instead of jobbing to the overrated likes of Rocky Maivia.

Darren Drozdov pinned Jeff Jarrett with an assist from Marc Mero! Boy! Does everyone of these guys ever suck! Dubba J would have done better to languish in WCW where guys like Dean Malenko could at least CARRY his ass to ***+ matches and I'd still be defending him as an underrated talent. What good can I say about him now? Mero, petition the board to drop Jacquie! Vince needs to do for her what he did for Chyna and then put them together in a program. Drozdov, he's too green to really do much anyway so I'll let HIM off the hook.

Val Venis really needs to improve on the stick before he tries to pull off his puns before each match. The match versus Chainz fairly sucked.

Marc Mero vs. Dustin Runnels, sorry, I don't have any notes for this match and it's been a week since I watched it (and, no, it didn't make the permanent tape) so I don't remember a whole lot about it but I don't think it would be going too much out on a limb to say that it was not very good at all, no sir.
