Will - on the Bob vs. Inoki, you at the very least want:
07/78 60 minute draw
12/79 Backlund wins title back
04/80 Miami match
The draw is a must.
If Frank recommends the match where Bob wins the title back from Inoki rather than the one where Inoki wins it, trust him. It also is the match less often seen.
The third can be gotten from Dan if he hasn't already sent it. This would have some in a while ago on one of his Puroresu Hunting expiditions, so you may already have it.
Maybe roll out a prelim list at some point and see if anyone has some suggestions on something being missed.

I talk about it in the first post in the thread. I like it. Not a MOTYC, but good and very interesting to watch since it's a "neutral court" - neither is working infront of their own fans, so the heat tends to indicate that the work is getting over with the FLA fans.

Thanks. The trouble with these multi-month threads is that you forget what you already read. |

I sent Will 3 DVDs with all the Inoki-Backlund matches I have, so gets to see the whole run.
Speaking of old footage, I was speaking with a friend in Japan who has knowledge of such things, and he told me that TV Asahi no longer has
a surprising number of NJ TV tapes. Not sure where they went.
This came up after I mentioned how the video quality of the NJ comm video from 4/19/84 seemed "muddy" That is when he informed me that the comm video was actually made from someone's VHS recording of that particular TV episode(s), since TV Asahi lost the master.
After further discussions with him, he has agreed to trade with me.
Expect the season sets for 1983 and 1984 to be made available in the vey near future. The majority are from his own master recordings, with the others from past trades. The person he was trading with just so happens to be the SAME person I trade with. He provided the Miami match, plus the Jumbo-Martel stuff.
Small world, ain't it?

I wish there were more guys like this around in North America. Every once in a while you find someone that has some TV that he recorded himself way-back-when. I found a guy a few years ago that taped a whole bunch of Chicago-market AWA and JCP TV from 1984-87. That's where I found Martel vs. Roberts and Martel vs. Hayes TV clips from Chicago. Problem was, he only taped his favourites' stuff, not complete shows.
Fortunately for me, he loved Bockwinkel and had a ton of promos that are gold.
But they don't appear every day, that's for sure. |

This is also how I found my trader who had a perfect version of the Worldwide Garvin-Blanchard. He dropped me a line at DVDVR and said he could help with some comps. He sent me some tapes and now everyone can experience a relatively rare match in very nice VQ. |

Will - have you tracked down:
| Quote: | WWF @ San Antonio, TX - Freeman Coliseum - January 5, 1993
Bob Backlund defeated WWF IC Champion Shawn Michaels via count-out (WWF Wrestling Grudge Matches 93)
Not sure if that actually aired, or was simply part of the commerical tape (which they did on occassion back then).
And:
WWF @ Poughkeepsie, NY - Mid-Hudson Civic Center - August 16, 1993
(aired Summer Slam Spectacular - 8/22/93)
WWF IC Champion Shawn Michaels (w/ Diesel) pinned Bob Backlund at around the 9-minute mark with a roll up and using the tights for leverage (Shawn Michaels: Hits from the Heartbreak Kid 95)
We have a review of that on out site by CRZ.
Will mentioned:
Bob Backlund vs. Bret Hart (Survivor Series 1994)
There are people who like their Superstars match where Backlund turned:
07/03/94 Bret Hart pinned Bob Backlund
That aired on 07/30/94 |
Frank was pretty high on a Bob-Shawn match, which has got to be one of those two at the top. I haven't got a clue which one it is... would be nice pass them by him to see if one jogs his memory.
If you're going with Survivor Series match between Bob and Bret, it's probably good to also toss in their earlier match. Like I said above, I've seen people praise it.
Another possible addition is a Bob-Larry match from the AWA/Pro Wrestling USA era. Frank mentioned it on the phone recently. Short (less than 10 minutes), but solid and fun. It's another match like the UWF stuff that fits in the gap between the original WWF run and his return.

I asked Tabe on CM about the Bat-Bat stuff to see if there's a decent match out of that batch. I've never seen any of it, and if any of it's "good", then the Bob Set would be a good way to get one or two out to a wider audiance rather than just the hardcores.
Also, you might want to get these:
UWF International
09/26/91 Nobuhiko Takada vs. Bob Backlund (1:15)
11/07/91 Nobuhiko Takada vs. Bob Backlund (15:42)
12/22/91 Yoji Anjoh vs. Bob Backlund (11:26)
The first is a quick KO finish that the crowd hates! It's so short that it, along with the pre-match and post-match don't take up much space. On the others, Tabe wrote on OSW several years ago:
| Quote: | 11/7/91 (UWFI) - The rematch from the above match. This one ends a little quick for my taste, but is still really good. Went 14 minutes or so, should've gone 20.
12/22/91 vs Yoji Anjoh - Good match that sees Anjoh tap out to the crossface chicken wing. |
I've seen the 11/07/91 match. It's "solid". There already is a great Takada match on the set, but this does happen to show that it wasn't a total fluke. I haven't seen the Anjoh match, and it would be an interesting addition.
The 05/21/89 match with Funaki *isn't* a good match. It is a pretty noted match in his career, so I wouldn't argue against it going on unless one is setting the bar at a level of only "good" matches should go on.

| Will, would you be including the famous Persian Clubs angle that led to Bob losing the title? I've heard tons about it over the years, but I've never actually seen it. |

| Will, I know that the "History of WWF Title" released by Coliseum Video in '87, contains Backlund's title win. I don't know if it's complete though. |

MSG 6/4/79 (2 discs)
Good 30 minute match between Backlund and Iron Sheik that was previously only available in snowstorm quality.
