|
|
from Dave Meltzer:
| Quote: | The big surprise that will supposedly change the entire history and face of the industry that TNA is promoting for Sunday's PPV is the return of Vince Russo.
In a panic move driven by the decline in ratings (which has been across the board for every pro wrestling and MMA TV show and not specific to TNA), the company has hired Russo to join the booking committee. Russo will work with Dutch Mantel and Jeff Jarrett. Mike Tenay and Scott D'Amore have been taken off the committee. It's unclear where Jeremy Borash stands.
The company has given Russo guidelines that there can be no sleaze on its wrestling shows, whatever that is supposed to mean. The announcement will be made to the wrestlers over the weekend.
At this point it is unclear what this will mean as far as personnel, but there will likely be a shake-up there as well. At this point we have no indication that any major players will be quitting immediately over this, although some will likely not renew their deals. The announcement does kill dead the Bill Goldberg negotiations. |
I would say TNA is right about dead. Jeff Jarrett and now Vince Russo. That means also that Samoa Joe will turn heel and Christian will turn face and heel 5 times next month. And that Johnny Knoxville and Steve-O become the new TNA tag champs.
it was almost fun while it lasted. |

Wait a minute, wasn't Russo born again and out of the wrestling business for good?
;)
Honestly, this could be backwardsly entertaining, in the "what were they THINKING?!" train-wreck kind of sense. All we need is Unca Eric with the black hair dye, some random 90s valet(s) to be sexually harassed in the name of Vincent Russo Superstud (say, what are Sable and Sunny doing these days?), and maybe a wheelchair -- or at least a cane -- to make this just about perfect.
;)

Wow, I figured it would be Kurt "Death Watch" Angle, or Spike TV forced Bill Goldberg to make a few appearances due to his talent contract with Spike.
I'd also assume this kills Jim Cornette dead in TNA as well, unless TNA is down with Corny spewing saliva all over the company's oldest/newest savior. Maybe we can get another T.J. Hooker-esque car hood jaunt out of Jimbo like allegedly happened when Cornette got into it with Tennessee promoter Terry Landell a few years ago.
I'm going on record that Samoa Joe's undefeated streak is stopped by either Tracy or Gail Kim.
Well, I suddenly give a shit about TNA again, but for all the wrong reasons.

While we're requesting old image favorites, how about the NWATNA Gilligan's Island crew or TNA Kool Aid Man? |

A couple of hilarious follow-ups. First from Wade Keller:
| Quote: | | Russo being hired is not the major announcement TNA has promised. The announcement being made on Sunday will be big, according to sources who have talked to people who know, and not a letdown. |
Insert your own "I gotta tell you Wade." joke.
Second, here's Dave Meltzer:
| Quote: | Lex Luger and Buff Bagwell are both booked for the Monday television tapings.
This deal was done by Jeff Jarrett, and is likely unrelated to Vince Russo coming in. Neither Luger nor Bagwell knew anything about Russo coming in, and did not know what their role would be or if it would be a recurring role.
Spike and TNA are close on a new deal for a better time slot. |
The coffin is being dug up as we speak. |

I was soooooooooooooooo hoping it would be Hermie Sadler's pathetic house shows that killed TNA... but I guess Vinnie Ru and Jeff Jarrett lining up another 2 dozen World Title reigns for DubbaJeff will kill it just as dead...
I'll be in Orlando for their scheduled October 9 taping... I think I'll visit the morgue... um... Universal Studios that night... :) This could be... fun... |

On one hand, Meltzer reported that it will most likely be a wrestler who is the surprise.
On the other hand, the Russo influence is already being felt. Witness Wade Keller's description of the Jay Lethal/Petey Williams match:
"Williams got to the ring, but Lethal didn't come out to his music. They went backstage to Dutt, Lethal, and Sabin horsing around backstage. Dutt was threatening to fart on Lethal's face, I think. Jerry Lynn walked in to discipline them and chew them out for not taking their lives seriously. Sabin was pretty funny as he told Jerry he "forgot this chip." He held up a corn chip as Lynn walked away, disgusted. Petey was drinking from a bottle of water, and he suspected that the Jackass gang may have put laxatives in it since Dutt was holding up a laxative box backstage. Lethal walked to the ring and was tying his shoe as he entered the ring, showing he wasn't taking things seriously or preparing adequately. Within a few minutes, Petey began clutching his stomach, and then his butt, selling the idea that the laxative was taking effect. West said it's nice to see that happening to a former member of Team Canada after all the things they've done. West said things could get nasty. Tenay said, "Let's not go there, at least not yet." Williams was unable to execute some of his offense for fear of having an accident. Lethal began waving his hand in front of his face as iff Petey was stinking up the ring. Petey hit the tuck DDT for a near fall. Petey signalled for the Canadian Destroyer, but seemed to be fighting an accident. The fans chanted, "Hold it in! Hold it in!" He set up the Destroyer, but he couldn't do it. Lethal then schoolboyed him for the win. Dutt ran to the ring and laughed uproariously with Lethal at their plan working."
Russo may not be booking sleaze, but I see bathroom humor is perfectly acceptable for TNA. |

We all remember how well the Lex Luger match where he had been dosed with laxative turned around WCW's fortunes in 2000. Good to see Russo is making sure to remember where his booking bread was buttered.
BTW, Corny already did an interview over the weekend where he suspected he wouldn't be long for TNA now that Russo had been hired.

Sorry about that.
Link from the Montgomery Advertiser, it was an article regarding Wrestle Birmingham, which Cornette is managing, I think, Dennis Condrey in right now.

Death Pool time:
1 month till Russo gets canned.
6 months till TNA goes out of business.
Too bad though. I can't remember the last TV show that I've laughed at as hard as Impact. Not just because Christian Cage is the best champ in wrestling today. But because a lot of the lines are so corny and goofy, that I have to laugh. Not to mention the hilarious facial expressions of Jeremy Borash, and the idiotic announcing of Mike Tenay and Don West. But the horrible booking is the funniest thing of all. |

Russo soon on the outs with TNA? Absolutely.
TNA going out of business in six months? Nah. Many of us have said that ever since TNA was first formed, and while it's true it would be gone without the Carters pumping money into it, as long as the Carters are willing to do it, TNA isn't going out of business any time soon.
What will cause TNA to slide down that slope is if they start diving into promoting shows all over the United States without growing their fanbase, similar to what happened with ECW. True, other factors came into play with ECW, but one of them was definitely promoting shows all over the country without growing a fanbase that could support it on a national level. TNA has mostly stuck to the Orlando studios for its shows.
That being said, of course TNA needs to grow its fanbase in order to sustain itself to the point where it can be a money maker that isn't dependant on the Carters' willingness to keep pumping money into it. And with the direction the company is going, they aren't going to grow that fanbase to that level.
But whether or not TNA stays in business depends on the Carters, and I don't see any indicator that they want to pull out. If they're unhappy with the direction of the product, they'll just let certain people go and bring somebody else in, just as they've been doing ever since they got involved. |

| I can't see Panda Energy giving up on TNA at a time when it looks like they'll soon get the second hour of TV they've been craving. Of course, without a complete overhaul of their booking team the opportunity that extra TV time gives them to hype their PPVs better will be squandered and just increase costs further. Russo's position seems untenable, but I don't have confidence that the inevitable changes TNA will make will go far enough. Jeff Jarrett and Dutch Mantell are also responsible for the mess they are in now because they haven't reined Russo in, but I doubt they'll lose their positions on the creative team. |
