glenn Robinson iii signed with Sacramento.
and as discussed in the clips thread, batum signed with the clippers. I guess they hope, it doesn't come down to sign the likes of JR smith and dion waiters.
edit: after I typed this, they announced Jared Dudley coming back. |

That's one of our two spots. Dudley is effectively slot #13 below, with #12 going to someone who might play a bit more. There may be some players waived that we're eyeballing.

Not to read too much into it until Giannis signed his SuperMax or doesn't sign his SuperMax, but...
Bron & AD aren't going to MIL, and Giannis probably knows that. KD ain't either.
Name dropping two current Lakers, pointing out that one is his idol, while also name dropping a third as giving him important advice... ;) |

The rumored feature matchup for Christmas night has the Lakers facing Luka and Dallas.
I guess the Clippers are a lock for opening night. And the ring ceremony, if they have it. |

Lakers vs Clips Opening night is official. That should be a fun night around here.
Lebron signed a two-year max extension today, which means he'll with the Lakers, 3 more years. Through 22-23. I guess they're still doing the paperwork for the impending Davis extension too. |

Looking at the "picks" we owe New Orleans for the AD deal:
Quote: | 2021 first round draft pick to New Orleans
L.A. Lakers' 1st round pick to New Orleans protected for selections 8-30 in 2021 and unprotected in 2022 [L.A. Lakers-New Orleans-Washington, 7/6/2019] |
Yeah, we're going to be picking somewhere between 8-30 next year, so we keep the pick. It converts to a 2022 first round pick, which will be a non-lotto pick barring injuries.
Quote: | 2023 first round draft pick to New Orleans
New Orleans has the right to swap its 2023 1st round pick for the L.A. Lakers' 2023 1st round pick [L.A. Lakers-New Orleans-Washington, 7/6/2019] |
Again, we'll need injuries to finish worse than NOP in 2023, so there's not going to be a swap.
Quote: | 2024 first round draft pick to New Orleans
L.A. Lakers' 2024 1st round pick to New Orleans or New Orleans has the right to instead receive the L.A. Lakers' 2025 1st round pick [L.A. Lakers-New Orleans-Washington, 7/6/2019] |
NOP will end up taking either the 2024 or the 2025.
Basically the 2022 pick and the 2024 or 2025 picks, along with the 2019 one sent in the original trade.
We already have title #17 in the bank, so the trade was worth it. |

apparently Quinn Cook is coming back to the Lakers. That takes care of one of the last spots on the roster. |

Cook is the last guy entering the season. We only $913K under the cap, and the vet minimum is $1.6M.
Per Yossi Gozlan, "the soonest they could sign a 15th player with at least 2 years of experience to a rest-of-season deal would be on February 24th when the prorated minimum gets below $913k."
https://twitter.com/YoggiMane/status/1335018895799844865
That's 15th simply by signing a FA. We just don't have the room given that $913K.
Per this, it looks like the trade deadline might be 3/25 and it looks like the buyout/waiver deadline is 4/9:
https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2020/12/nba-targeting-march-25-for-2021-trade-deadline.html
My guess is that the "15th" spot won't be filed until between 2/24 to 4/9 unless it's part of a trade.
We could fill it with a trade prior to that if we move someone whose contract is big enough to allow back 2 players.
Free agents we signed in the off season can't be traded until February 6, which would include AD, KCP, Harell, Mathews, Gasol, Cook, Dudley & Morris.
We could trade Schroder, Kuz, Caruso, McKinnie & THT at any point. Only Schroder and Kuz make enough to bring back two players... I'm not sure if you could take two vet minimums for Caruso' contract given we're under the floor... think the contracts need to be closer. Anyway, we're not trading Caruso for that, and are unlikely to trade Kuz for that and instead look for a single player upgrade over him.
151 games for three teams that went to the Finals each year, with the Champs in two of those years. He averaged 7-2-2 for them on .461/.406/.815 in 15 minutes per game. He was 5-1-1 for us on .425/.365/.786 for us last year in 12 minutes per game. We didn't use him hardly at all in the playoffs last year, but he did have 34 playoff games with the Warriors in their 2018 & 2019 runs to the Finals, averaging 10+ minutes a game. Pretty much everything written about him over the years was that he was a good locker room guy, didn't cause issues.
On the Lakers he's basically the 11th guy which is the same role he had last regular season before Morris joined up. I think he's fine in that role. We could use an emergency ball handler for the deep bench, and possibly on nights when we're Load Managing.
Our other options we a 3&D guy like Batum, but he likely looked at the Clippers as more playing time... at least until the Kuzma issue resolved. The other option would be to try to get a deep bench rim protector.
Just a guess that G and ball handling were the early, load managed need and that if Wing Depth or Spot Rim Protecting Depth become an issue, they'll be the ones dealt with as the year goes on.

This is actually worth watching, the clip through the link:

Okay I love this possession. In 0:27 we see:
🟣 Good Matthews P&R D
🟡 Schröder point of attack D
🟣 Schröder & Harrell communicate to ice a side ball screen
🟡 Schröder quick recover to shooter
🟣 Harrell iso D vs a PG
🟡 Matthews off-ball switch w/DS to prevent post mismatch
8:22 AM · Dec 12, 2020 |
Note that the last one ("Matthews off-ball switch w/DS to prevent post mismatch") is initially called by Matthews pointing to Schroder to switch out to Kawhi at the top of the 3 point arc (0:16 into the clip), and Schroder with not seeing it or not grasping it as he was trying to block Ibaka out of strong low post position. When Matthews gets into position a second later (0:17) he literally SHOVES Schroder out of the post defense in the general direction of Kawhi. Options gone, Beverly is forced into a bad shot as Trez is doing a good job in him.
Matthews is a really smart defender. I'd love him a bit taller, but he's got a good thick body that lets him defend guys with some size (like Kawhi or switching onto Ibaka in an emergency), and the wingspan with long arms is super nice.
He was also showing some of the stuff that Tim has pointed out of slipping towards the basket in half court offense, and getting lost by his defender. We really didn't have a creative line last night with so many out. But that's going to be handy with creative people like Bron and Gasol having the ball in their hands, or someone like AD occupying help defense... and Mathews slipping into space when the help leaves him.
Some other comments from Tim:

In the first 4(!) minutes of last night's Lakers game we saw Harrell:
✅ Soft/catch hedge
✅ Execute drop coverage
✅ Switch on a screen
✅ Use his quickness to disrupt the rim as a helper, take a charge, and crash the boards effectively
All with good technique

Last night was funny because we saw players on both teams benefit greatly from being under new coaching. LAC looked more competent offensively and Harrell was used much better defensively.
All w/pre-season sloppiness but you can see the intent/concepts behind what was done.

AD/Gasol/Harrell can all defend the rim well. It's just when all 3 are out (which happened last night but won't happen much in real games) that Zu started getting whatever he wanted.

Here's another clip showing Mathews and Trez working together:

Here's a really smart play by Harrell & Matthews defensively
Harrell is there to handle Zu [JDW Note: this is #25 that's Kabangele not Zubac] rolling (who was open due to the soft hedge from Schröder) and immediately points for Wes to take Batum [JDW Note: #33 that's Kabangele not Zubac]in the corner.
This means no open roll + no open kickout 3s
Defensive chemistry!!
