Didn't put this in the 2014, and seeing it again makes for a good first post in the 2015 thread:
CFB Bowl Wrap: Playoffs Outshine Bowl Games
28.2M Rose Bowl (Playoff SF)
28.3M Sugar Bowl (Playoff SF)
34.2M National Title Game
Nothing else topped 10M.
This is one of the two reasons we're going to see the field expand soon to 8 teams in short order:
Non-Playoffs = Draw Less
Playoffs = Draw More
4 teams = 3 games
8 teams = 7 games
8 games more than doubles the number of games that draw. It also lets them load up 4 games on New Years as Playoff QF that will probably average 20M+ viewers each. Starting with let's say 15M with the first game of the day, then say 17.5M the second, and the 28-28 for the last two... that's a 22M average. 28-28 might be high, but 15-17.5M might be low for the first two.
In turn, the shift the two SF to the following weekend (or Friday Night / Saturday Night) they might pop more than 28M. Which in turn builds even more towards the Final.
* * * * *
The second reason is just math:
4 Spots = 1 Big 5 Conference Out
If one conference gets 2 teams (read SEC), then it will be 2 Big 5 Conferences out.
All it takes is 3 of the conferences to start wanting to expand to 8 teams for things to start to break. The SEC probably already wants it, and the Big 12 was out of the playoffs... so they now want it. If Ohio State was out, the Big 10 would have wanted it. You know over time that the PAC, Big 12, Big 10 and ACC are going to have their Champion sitting out on their asses. In fact, the ACC knows that if FSU didn't run the table last season that they would have been out. So...
There will be cracks on this on the "we were screwed" side right along with the "ESPN will pay us how much for one more round?!?!?!" side.

College bowl payouts surpass $500 million
Money hand over fist. $200M increase. Which is odd since the difference betwen the last BCS contract ($180M) and the new Playoff + 4 Other Bowls ($470M) is $300M. Something seems a bit off... would like to see the actual report. |

Really bad start to the year for the PAC. Washington was the dog, but it's not like Boise played well. The Pirate's team just crapped the bed against Portland State. Stanford was an embarrassment. Sun Devils didn't uphold PAC Honor against the SEC. :)
USC has been frustrating. They have points, but their offensive line has given up far too many sacks and other plays for losses. |

Notre Dame pulls one out of their ass at the end. Grrrr
Auburn pulled one of of their ass late, and it didn't even feel like Scott was happy. The team played so badly that he spent three and a half hours doing a slow burn. |

Great job of Oregon to choke. Mix in USC and UCLA losing, and a few others, along with not making the playoffs. End of a bad season for the PAC. |
