It's good for Wesley.
I also read it as confirmation that Bill isn't going to be doing a Grantland-style website over at HBO/Bleacher Report/Time Warner. It's possible that he might do a lower scale sports focused one, but it's hard to tell how interested he'd be in that since he seemed to love the Grantland was more than just sports. So... one gets the feeling that he's not going to do Grantland 2.0.
Said it before: the sports guys will be heading out or get rolled into ESPN's website. Lowe should find an easy place to land, possible even at Time Warner via the NBA's website. |

Grantland is probably a drop in the bucket. Lots of changes to cut costs, especially when one sees it's not a one year cut:
http://thebiglead.com/2015/09/21/layoffs-are-coming-to-espn
Quote: | ... Disney has notified ESPN to trim $100 million from the 2016 budget and $250 million in 2017. |
So expect a round of cuts. They'll wack stuff now, and then look at other places to cut going into 2017. Grantland without Simmons is likely some place they can cut. But there are also likely a lot of marginal shows / talent they can cut on the network. |

I would probably watch if they made a mini-series out of that story.

ESPN has lost more than $2 billion because of cord cutting
The headline is misleading because it's a projection of lost revenue if there was no cord cutting. ESPN has seen its subscription base decrease, but revenue has increased due to a higher rate per subscriber. Anyway, I thought it was an interesting article.

I recall an article that explain some of the decline being due to the deals ESPN cut. My recollection is that the new deal gave carriers more flexibility in either not carrying ESPN or in moving it to a tier away from Basic. I don't recall how much of the 7M drop was thought to be due to that, but seemed to be a decent amount.
It's also worth noting that while ESPN has dropped 7M in the past two years, that increase in carriage fee isn't small:
http://www.mediapost.com/publications/article/193856/espn-set-to-pass-7-sub-fee-in-2017.html
Quote: | ESPN’s current deal with Time Warner Cable calls for it to receive more than $5.40 a sub a month starting in the middle of this year; then passing the $7 mark in 2017; and closing in on the $7.50 mark the following year. The deal calls for an annual increase in the 6.5% range.
By the end of this decade, ESPN is set to collect just about $8 a sub a month. |
$5.40 in 2013 --> $6.61 in 2015 = 22% increase
As the article points out, ESPN is making more revenue now even with the drop in subs.
$5.40 * 99M subs * 12 months = $6.4B
$6.61 * 91.8M subs * 12 months = $7.3B
As long as the fee goes up quicker than the decline, they're fine.
Well... unless they factored in *no* decline when cutting their various TV deals. ;) |
