Greece 1-2 Czech Republic
Poland 1-1 Russia

4 Russia (+3)
3 Czech Republic (-2)
2 Poland (0)
1 Greece (-1)

Czech Republic vs Poland
Greece vs Russia

Russia isn't safely through, here are the tiebreakers:

Quote:
Tie-breaking criteria

If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, the following criteria are applied to determine the rankings:

1. Higher number of points obtained in the matches played between the teams in question;

2. Superior goal difference resulting from the matches played between the teams in question (if more than two teams finish equal on points);

3. Higher number of goals scored in the matches played between the teams in question (if more than two teams finish equal on points);

4. If, after having applied criteria 1) to 3) to several teams, two teams still have an equal ranking, criteria 1) to 3) are reapplied exclusively to the matches between the two teams in question to determine the final rankings of the two teams. If this procedure does not lead to a decision, criteria 5) to 9) apply in the order given;

5. superior goal difference in all group matches;

6. higher number of goals scored in all group matches;

7. position in the UEFA national team coefficient ranking system

8. fair play conduct of the teams (final tournament);

9. drawing of lots

If two teams play last match in group stage, and they tie the match with same points, goals scored and goals received instead above tiebreakers, they play penalty shootout, provided no other team in the group finishes with same number of points.

The easiest thing would be to have a winner of the two games:

* Czech Republic vs Poland winner locks up one spot
* Russia is top of the group with a win
* if Greece wins they advance via #1 (which turns into head-to-head)

If Czech Republic vs Poland is a tie *and* Greece wins, you get:

4 Russia
4 Czech Republic
4 Greece
3 Poland

Under #1 it would be (by eliminating the games with Poland):

3 Russia
3 Czech Republic
3 Greece

With them going to Goal Diff in those three games... then Goals Scored.

On Goal Diff, Czech Republic is "sitting in the clubhouse" of this threesome at -2 (1-4 loss to Russia, 2-1 win over Greece).

If Greece beats Russia, they will move from -1 (1-2 loss to the Czechs) to no worse than 0. So they would finish above the Czechs.

In turn, Russia is at +3 via the pounding of the Czech Republic. They would need to lose by 5 to even tie Czech Republic in Goal Diff... but they would have scored at least 4 goals (via the win over Czech Republic), while Czech Republic is in the clubhouse with just 3 goals. So...

If Czech Republic vs Poland is a tie *and* Greece beats Russia, the Czechs are out unless Greece beats Russia by 6 goals.

So a three-way tie favors Greece and Russia massively. The Czechs don't want any part of that. Hence, beat Poland and get to the safety of 6 points. They can advance with a draw if Russia wins or Russia-Greece is a draw.

So a lot of "win and in", as in if any of the four win, they're in.

That was a pretty funny result. :) Still, it would take a miracle for them to fail getting through to the next round. But that one will be interesting to see if the team is settled into the one Jurgen wants and avoids risking finishing 4th and facing a playoff with OFC's #1. :)

Spain 4-0 Ireland
Croatia 1-1 Italy

4 Spain (+4)
4 Croatia (+2)
2 Italy (0)
0 Ireland (-6)

Last group games:

Spain vs Croatia
Italy vs Ireland

Spain would advance on a win or draw (their GD would take them through if they both at 5 points).

Italy of course needs to win to advance:

Spain win (7) + Italy win (5) = Croatia (4) goes home
Croatia win (7) + Italy win = Spain (4) goes home
Spain-Croatia draw (5) + Italy win (5) = all level at 5 points = mini-group:

4 Spain
2 Croatia
1 Italy

Since Croatia would have draws against Spain and Italy, while Italy lost to Spain. So Italy would go home.

So Italy needs (i) to win, and (ii) a winner/loser in the other game.

Ireland will pack it in, so Italy is the heavy favorite. So it's really about Croatia vs Spain.

Darke/McManaman and Healey/Mustoe will each call one game on 6/17, ESPN has not decided which.

Announcer assignments were released today on these two games - Darke/McManaman get the Dutch Last Stand, Healey/Mustoe get Germany-Denmark.

Ukraine 0-2 France

France to 4 points with Sweden left to play. Ukraine stay at 3 points with England left to play.

England-Sweden is now on. Roy is inexplicably playing: Carroll & Welbeck up front with Young on the wing rather than behind Welbeck, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to the bench.

*flips over to Gamecast*

Quote:
24' GOAL Andy Carroll! Ball over the top from deep by Steven Gerrard and a brilliant header from Carroll finds the bottom left-hand corner.

25' That is an absolutely immense header - made in Liverpool!

Guardian:

Quote:
GOAL! Sweden 0-1 England (Carroll, 23 min): Roy Hodgson will allow himself a quiet smile, because his plan has worked to perfection. On the right flank, Steven Gerrard bends a sumptuous ball into the area that was just begging to be headed in. With Sweden's central defenders all over the place, Carroll gets in between them and bullets a towering header into the bottom-left corner from 12 yards out, Isaksson given no chance. What a header! What a managerial masterstroke!

Argh... I hate Andy Carroll. :)

On the other hand, Shevchenko had two headers in the Ukraine-Sweden game, so one can see what Roy was thinking.

If it makes you feel any better, he later gave up the free kick that led directly to Sweden's first goal. :)

Walcott had a great game today. He scored the second and assisted Welbeck for the third. It will be interesting to see who Roy drops for Rooney against Ukraine.

I like ZM's write up of it, basically calling it a wildly entertaining poorly played game. :)

Nicklas Bendtner has been banned for one match and fined €100,000 for showing his sponsored underwear versus Portugal.

What a crock of shit.

Bendtner wearing a sponsor on his skivvies = 100k fine and 1 match ban

Russian fans riot and beat the hell out of stewards and others = 120k fine, no stadium ban

Croat fans racist conduct vs. Turkey in Euro 2008 = 12k fine, no stadium ban

Edit: Croat fans racist chants at Euro 2012 = 80k fine, no stadium ban

Right, their priorities are in order.

Yeah, there is that.

On the other hand, Bendtner is a dipshit for doing that, so I don't have a lot of sympathy for him. The punishment for the racists should be stronger, while Bendtner's punishment is at an okay level.
