|
|
So... I'm lifting this from local radio which did it recently. They did a draft of all-time Lakers players. It was three studio folks that participated in it. They picked a Starting 5 and a Sixth Man. They did it in a snake draft format to be fair. It was supposed to be based on what they did as Lakers, but they kind of flubbed that by AD being picked by one of the guys based on 20 games... even Bron is a bit of a stretch, at least until this season is done. ;)
Jag & Yohe... want to do this?
My modifications/clarifications would be:
* draft more of a bench rotation, though obviously our Starters eat up lots of playing time
My thought would be say a 3-man bench (forcing you to pick some flexibility), but am open to a 4-man bench if you two want to.
* firmly fixed on what they did as Lakers
What Wilt did before coming to the Lakers doesn't count - you're not getting 1967 Wilt, or even younger Wilt. You're not getting Bucks Jabbar. McAdoo is only what he did as a Lakers Lakers Malone and Glove, not what they did in Utah and Seattle. Etc.
* firmly fixed that they need some real playing time here
AD just started here. If we win a title, I would be okay picking Bron after the season... but what he did last year and so far isn't enough. Etc.
* No fucking around with positions
Cap isn't a Power Forward. If you draft Cap+Wilt or Cap+Shaq, one of them is heading to the bench.
On the flip side, Gasol kinda-sorta did play at kinda-sort PF with Bynum. Gasol was much better at C, so I'm not totally comfy with him at PF... but if you're on board with him being able to pair with the other Centers, I'm not going to fight it.
In turn, Kobe never really was a Forward in his prime, or really after they moved Eddie until the end when he was washed up.
* Not all positional flexibility is out the window
West was both a PG and SG in his career. I'd treat him as a Guard who could play with anyone in the backcourt. Kobe was pretty much like Jordan - a "Point" Shooting Guard because the ball was in his hands so much. I get pairing him with most any type of Guard, similar to how Jordan was. There are probably others like that that will come up.
* * * * *
On the Snake draft, what spots do you want? There's a benefit to having the #1 pick to get "your guy", while picking #3 gets you the #4 pick to be the first person to be able to create a "pairing". Sitting in the #2 spots keeps you regularly active. Any preferences?

Just Guard, Center, Forward.
Maybe leave Davis & James out of it.
I'll play but I don't see a way of picking a winner.

C+F+F+G+G + a 3-4 man Bench
No real point to pick a winner, but just to pick some teams and see who we end up with, what type of teams they are, and who we left off.
I agree that we should leave AD and Bron out of it. We can revisit in a few years of they do what we hope they do. |

We all know the top 3 picks and it’ll be a matter of preference at 4.
The pick to get is whoever takes Magic. His team gonna win.

Will there be a cold envelope Commish jdwtern will be drawing for the 1st pick or a good old fashioned coin toss in honor of Magic in ‘79?

Steve & Jag:
Select different numbers between 1-3.
I've sent Bob Morris a note on what Pick corresponds to each number that you could select.
Doesn't matter who selects a number first. One select a number, post it... then the other come in and post a different number. I'll be assigned the number you guys didn't take.

Before we pick, let's hit one more item:
Do we include the Minnesota-only/mostly players? Of course Baylor mostly played in LA. But for guys like Mikan, the game totally changed after Russell and Wilt came along. Do we want to include those guys? |

Maybe 8 rounds. Looking at the players, it gets thin once we get to 20 or so especially if we're not using the Minnesota players. |

SMH.
Only Minneapolis guys besides Elgin that even have a chance are Mikan and Pollard.
I think we can go at least 9 rounds if not the full 12.
