I sent a PM to jdw asking for recommendations on Terry Gordy matches in All Japan worth putting on a comp.
This was his response...
| Quote: | Howdy Will,
From the old AJPW Star Ratings list:
http://www.otherarena.com/z_jdw/ajpwlist.htm
The dates are _air dates_, not match dates. I can look up th match dates for you later.
For Singles:
Bigger ones:
06/17/90 Gordy vs. Tsuruta ***1/2 (Triple Crown win)
06/24/90 Hansen vs. Gordy ***1/2 (Triple Crown loss)
04/18/93 Williams vs. Gordy (Carny) ***3/4
04/25/93 Gordy vs. Misawa (Carny) ****1/4
06/08/93 Gordy vs. Kobashi ****1/4
There isn't a good Gordy vs. Kawada.
There's a gap there from 1991-92. It's just repeat stuff - another possibly good Misawa match, another good Kobashi match. But I think it would be better to have them clustered so you can see Gordy's singles work in 1990, and then in 1993... and without the repeats.
For smaller ones:
06/03/90 Gordy vs. Davey Boy Smith ***
For Tags, some possiblities:
05/05/91 Hansen & Spivey vs. Gordy & Williams (World Tag title change) ****1/4
11/24/91 Gordy & Williams vs. Taue & Tsuruta ***1/2
12/15/91 Gordy & Williams vs. Misawa & Kawada (Tag League) ****1/4
09/06/92 Tsuruta & Taue vs. Gordy & Williams ****1/4
09/13/92 Gordy & Williams vs. Misawa & Kobashi ****
10/11/92 Tsuruta & Taue vs. Gordy & Williams (World Tag) ****1/2
02/14/93 Gordy & Williams vs. Misawa & Kawada (World Tag - title change) ****1/2
05/23/93 Gordy & Williams vs. Kawada & Taue (World Tag - title change) ***1/2
08/01/93 Kawada & Taue vs. Gordy & Williams (World Tag) ***3/4
The 1990 list begins with the Misawa vs. Jumbo era, so it's missing the first part of the year. You'd also want the 03/06/1990 (match date) Gordy & Williams vs. Hansen & Tenryu (first title win for Gordy & Williams, and end of the Revolution). And the 04/19/90 (match date) Gordy & Williams vs. Hansen & Spivey tag title matchmatch.
On the last two, I'd watch them both and pick which ever is better. These are Meltzer's ratings, so I don't know. The last one is Terry's last title match in Japan, with he and Doc failing to get the belts back.
For a six-man, this would be interesting to add:
07/14/91 Gordy & Williams & Rude vs. Misawa & Kawada & Kikuchi ****
Again, air date. It's interesting to watch Rude team with them.
This might be a decent add since it's Misawa & Kawada & Kobashi:
05/17/92 Williams & Gordy & Slinger vs. Misawa & Kobashi & Kawada ****
Gordy & Williams weren't exactly know as great six-man wrestlers in All Japan... that was where Jumbo & Co. vs. Misawa & Co. were great.
On pre-1990... I'd have to do some research.
Why don't you roll all this out on tOA. First post your question to me, the second post you can toss up my response. There probably are a lot of people who've watched this stuff more recently than I have.
|
So, does anyone else here have any recommendations on must-have Gordy matches? Thanks. |

Some others from Japan that I'll have to look up dates on:
Funks vs. Hansen & Gordy (Terry's "retirement" match)
Jumbo vs. Terry (from one of Frank's round robbin tapes)
Hansen vs. Jumbo (1986 Int'l Title bloodbath)
Hansen & Gordy vs. Tenryu & Kawada (1988 Tag League)
Probably a Hansen & Gordy vs. Jumbo & Yatsu from 1988-89... I just can't remember which if any was the best.
I recall Gordy challenging Tenryu for the Triple Crown in 1989. Don't recall it being very good. :)

I was saving the Funk Retirement match for a Funk comp I am working on.
| Quote: | | Jumbo vs. Terry (from one of Frank's round robbin tapes) |
I got Terry-Jumbo from 6/4/85 on the comp
| Quote: | Hansen vs. Jumbo (1986 Int'l Title bloodbath)
Hansen & Gordy vs. Tenryu & Kawada (1988 Tag League) |
I have both of these included. |

Gordy vs. Misawa from 6-1-91 smokes Gordy's 1990 singles work. I think on a whole, Gordy was more consistently "on" in 1991 and delivered big time in matches where you wouldn't expect, like a 6 Man Tag leading up to the big Misawa/Kawada vs. Gordy/Williams tag title match from 7-24-91.

I wouldn't disagree. But...
In a comp like this, one has to have the historical first TC win of a guy's career. That's 1990.
One also has to have a Gordy vs. Hansen from this period as a comp to their earlier one. Hansen winning the title from him is a passable example.
The problem with the 6/91 match with Misawa is that I don't think Will is don't one of those "Every Ric Flair Match I Can Put My Hands On!!!" comps. His Barry comp clearly wasn't as there are several Tully vs. Barry matches, and he appeared to select one.
I tend to think the 1993 match is a good comp since bang-bang-bang one can see him with Doc, then Misawa and then with Kobashi all as he's headed towards the OD later in the year.

jdw hit it right on the head. Most of the time, my comps aren't just for the best matches although I hope they end up there. Many times, it is to hit significant career moments (title wins, losses) as well as to tell a story. Other times, I just want to showcase different matchups like Gordy's clip against Bulldog which seems like such an odd pairing. Sometimes, I have to go with what the time allows me since some matches just don't fit. Alot of people aren't going to shell out $60 a pop for a comp (as I found out with my Hart Foundation 1997 comp) so I have to axe alot of stuff I normally would include in a comprehensive comp. I wish I would have had more time to research his All Japan stuff but I go back to work on Monday (I am a teacher) so I wanted to make sure this comp and my Dick Murdoch comp were complete.
I found it interesting that most of the guys that Gordy teamed up with are people he had matches against including Rick Martel, Michael Hayes, Jimmy Snuka, Stan Hansen and Doc (at several different times). I also think that Gordy is one hell of a tag wrestler who was able to get more out of less than anybody else I can think of. Hell, watching those Von Erichs-Freebirds matches, it is clear that Gordy was instrumental in making all of those guys (even Mike) look like world-beaters.
Anyway, this is the final match list I came up with....

Glad to see the Martel/Gordy tag match made it. I really liked that match.
If you want a VQ upgrade, at least one gen, I originally got that bout from Steve Freidlander. |

Wow, I completely missed out on this. GH's comp is probably long since made, but I guess this can't hurt. :)

I don't think its a matter of being a completist, but in my estimation the 6/91 Misawa match is the best singles Gordy had in 1990s All Japan. I think it is a good bit better than their 92 Carny match and has a more historically important finish than the 93 CC. Of course, you can argue it is more historically important for Misawa than for Gordy, but still an important match for the promotion as a whole.

I think the match qualifies as a significant moment, as Gordy is the second huge All Japan star to drop a singles fall to Misawa. It is also at a point in 91 where Gordy really began to turn it up, looking like the best worker in smaller show 6 man tags and even in the big tags opposite Misawa, Kawada, and Kobashi, and it also plays into the even bigger and more important Double Tag Titles switch next month. Again, more historic for Misawa than for Gordy, but it also marks Mitsy's first big singles victory with an elbow. I think another thing working in favor of including this match is that you can get it in damn near DVD quality, since it appeared on the Misawa 5 Crown King Comm set.

Yeah, the comp has been done for awhile :(
Oh well, I keep finding things on match lists driving me crazy with these comps. For example, in WCCW a Flair-Gordy match takes place and is on Lynch's match lists. Good or bad, this would have def. made the cut. |

Terry Gordy wrestled NWA champion Ric Flair in Dallas on 1/28/1983.
Terry Gordy wrestled Ted DiBiase inside a steel cage on 10/17/1986. "Doctor Death" Steve Williams was supposed to challenge for Gordy's UWF title, but was unable to wrestle due to an injury. DiBiase stepped in and took the match. Ross called DiBiase's win as if the title had changed hands, but subsequently revealed that the match was non-title because DiBiase was a last minute replacement and no contract was signed.

| I'll have to check but I think I included the Dibiase match on the Dibiase in Mid South set. For Gordy, I tried not to include too many matches that were already included on other sets. |

Hey, that's what "Missing matches" addendums are for. Finding things after a comp is finished is standard. |

I'm pretty sure Frank has a review of the Gordy/Flair match laying around somewhere on tOA. I recall this match being discussed when I frst started coming around regularly in 2001 or so.
Like many Flair matches from the mid-1980's on, it's disappointing, because Gordy has to work Flair's generic big man match (I'm thinking stuff like the press slam and chucking Flair off the top which weren't ever Gordy staples that I've seen), which is a letdown considering how much Gordy had to offer as an opponent and how uncreative Flair could be in laying out a match.

The was their 1/11/85 match which is easily identifiable because of a prematch confrontation with Billy Jack Haynes and Sunshine.

| Both of the Flair/Gordy matches I've seen have been solid; but you expect a lot more. These were matches you had a feeling could be classics, but it was total Flair by the #'s. They also had the disadvantage of not being given a lot of time as Flair usually got. I think one got about 11 minutes, the other around 13 minutes. |
